Nashville Community CollegesNashville Tennessee hosts six community colleges and 11 vocational and technical schools and offers over 50 different degree programs and a dozen certificate programs. Nashville community colleges service seven counties in the Middle Tennessee areas, including Cheatham, Montgomery, and Stewart counties along with Dickson, Houston, and Humphreys counties. A brief history Nashville community colleges began as an offshoot of Vanderbilt University in the 1960s. Nashville State Technical Institute, or NSTI, was formed to supply training required for positions requiring a two year degree or a professional certificate. It also began core training for more advanced technical education. NSTI became a full community college in 1970 and began enrolling nearly 400 students. As the needs of the community and students changed NSTI evolved its curriculum and programs to better suit demands. As it evolved it Nashville State Technical Institute was renamed Nashville State Community College. Nashville State Community College is now operated by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Under a judicial agreement Nashville State is careful to create and manage programs that do not directly compete for students that may otherwise attend Tennessee State University also located in Nashville. Classes Nashville State Community College is similar to other community colleges in regard to its courses and programs. Students can build attend their foundational colleges and transfer to their undergraduate programs. Students can also receive vocational training and achieve two year technical degrees in agriculture, IT, and computer sciences. Campuses Nashville State Community College now operates from five different campuses in five different locations. Its main campus is located in Nashville Tennessee. Certain campuses specialize in specific education. Humphreys County The Humphrey County Campus is located in Waverly Tennessee. Classes offered at the Humphreys County campus focus on applied science with options in business or technical concentrations. These core classes lead to an Associate of Arts degree or Associate of Science degree. Campuses in Nashville The Southeast, Dickson, Cookeville, and Main campus are both located in Nashville and can attend classes geared towards core class learning. Students at the Southeast campus can also enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.
